Group B Strep Awareness Month
Group B Strep Awareness Month is an annual campaign held in July aiming to highlight the importance of group B Strep awareness, education and research. Getting as many people as possible involved in raising awareness and funds for Group B Strep education and prevention.
What is Group B Strep
Group B Strep (GBS) is found in the digestive tract or in adult women, in the vagina. Although many people have not heard of the condition, it can have a devastating impact on families.
The signs of early-onset GBS, which accounts for around 75% of the total, arise in the first week of a baby’s life and often only hours after delivery, whereas late-onset GBS becomes clear after the first 7 days. After 3 months it is extremely rare.
GBS affects nearly 1:2000 births in the UK; a total of over 700 fatal or neonatal infections annually, of which approximately 10% tragically die.
