Sepsis Claims

If you or a loved one has been affected by sepsis, we understand that you will be feeling worried.

We are here to help you.

What causes sepsis?

Sepsis is a medical problem which is not only common but sadly is increasing.

It is often talked about as an infection but sepsis is actually the process where an existing infection starts attacking the person’s own body. It can come from many different infections, some of which are otherwise harmless, and is often related to where the person’s immune system is already weakened. The infection can accelerate and start attacking the body, usually beginning with the soft tissues.

If this inflammatory immune response is not identified and treated swiftly, it can spread very quickly, leading to impaired function of the organs. If antibiotics are not administered, this can lead to disability or death; if sufficient fluid is not given, this can also lead to septic shock and dangerously low blood pressure.

Risks associated with sepsis

The risk of death is ever present – 30% of cases of sepsis; 50% of instances of severe sepsis; and tragically 80% of cases of septic shock lead to the individual not surviving. Despite this, there are often instances of the tell-tale signs being missed. In some cases this may be forgivable, since early sepsis can mimic other, more innocent illnesses but we have experience of many cases where diagnosis should have been made and treatment given much more quickly but, through error or oversight, was not. We are here to help you if you have or a family member has experienced this.
