Today, more grieving parents have been sharing their stories of poor maternity care in East Kent Hospital Trust, resulting in avoidable injuries and the loss of their babies. 

We act for Jack who suffered a brain injury as a baby during his birth.   Jack had bleeding in the ventricles of his brain, called an intraventricular haemorrhage, which caused damage to the frontal lobe of his brain.  This area of the brain is responsible for Executive Function.

Talking about dying and death can often feel like a conversation to avoid, it can feel scary and daunting, but it is often not as hard as you might think. The Dying Matters campaign (which runs from 8th - 14th May 2023) encourages people to open up and talk about the important stuff.

Between 8 – 14 May 2023 Hospice UK host the Dying Matters Awareness Week, with the aim of providing a time for communities across the country to come together to talk, heal and break the stigma about death, dying and grief.

In new draft guidelines for the NHS, NICE is recommending remifentanil be offered to women in labour for pain relief as an alternative to an epidural, and say that the advantages include more mobility during labour and might lead to fewer births using instruments like forceps and ventouse.

I wrote an article last year about Deborah James' inspirational work to raise awareness and remove the taboo around bowel cancer. It is sincerely hoped that her work will be continued and people will not be afraid to seek treatment. This year, although this article still focuses on bowel cancer, the news has the potential to be more promising to those undergoing treatment.

Today is Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE) awareness day and our Senior Associate and Solicitor, Michelle Beckett, looks at a particular type of HIE (neonatal), what this is and what it can mean for those who have suffered it.

During this Endometriosis Awareness Month 2023 we have been following the incredible work being undertaken by newly founded charity, The Endometriosis Foundation. Their mission is to help to create a future where Endometriosis is recognised and understood, resulting in earlier diagnosis and treatment.

We follow the ongoing developments in relation to the inadequacy of care at Nottingham University Hospitals and were saddened to read that the Trust have admitted failings in the care of baby Wynter, who died at 23 minutes old.

During the same week that we announced that we are proudly part of the Meningitis Research Foundation’s legal panel, we also saw a High Court settlement after a little girl lost all four limbs due to a delay in diagnosis of meningitis.
